Landfill gas utilization by a CHP unit

The Vereinigte Ville landfill has been in operation since 1970 and has an area of approx. 90 ha and a waste volume of approx. 25 million m³. Until 1997, mainly household waste and waste similar to household waste was deposited, until mid-2005, commercial waste that had not yet been pre-treated. Due to the waste deposited, the Vereinigte Ville landfill site generates considerable amounts of landfill gas, which is collected by means of an actively operating gas collection system. In 2009, the gas quantities produced amounted to approximately 2000 mN3, with a CH4 content of 50% by volume. After a systematic investigation of possible gas utilization concepts, a cogeneration plant with three 943 kWel gas engines was realized and supplemented by an upstream landfill gas treatment plant.
