Company Profile

The STEP Consulting GmbH is a small independent consultant company based in Aachen/Germany working in the field of Energy- and Process- Engineering since 1996. The main focus of the engineering work lies on membrane separation techniques and evaporation processes for drinking and wastewater treatment on one side and on energy supply by dual-purpose systems on the other side.

The STEP Consulting GmbH is offering all engineering and consultancy services which are generally necessary for the proper realization of a project: starting with a preliminary design including feasibility and economic-efficiency figures, going on to approval design and preparation of tender documents, checking and evaluating the bids and finally supervising construction, commissioning, and guarantee test.

The activities of the company concerning seawater and brackish water desalination include expert reports and process evaluation and selection.

In close cooperation with Aachen University (RWTH) and PowerTech Training Center (KWS e.V.), STEP Consulting GmbH performs training courses for managers, operators, and maintenance engineers of desalination plants in operation or under construction. These courses pursue the aim of imparting knowledge about the main desalination processes to the participants. Some topics of the courses are: water chemistry, design of ME-, MSF-, TVC-, RO-plants, corrosion problems and material selection, Single- and Dual - Purpose operation modes.

The past courses have been ordered by GECOL (General Electricity Company of Libya) and VEOLIA WATER respectively SIDEM to train the future staff for Abutaraba and Zuara Plants (MED, 40,000 m³/d). As an ongoing project, nearly 200 engineers pre-selected as staff for the new Libyan desalination plants Derna, Soussa, Zawia, and Zuara Extension will be trained in Aachen from June, 2008 until October, 2009 by order of VEOLIA WATER SIDEM.

The basis for the company’s competence in seawater and brackish water desalination is the work of Prof. Robert Rautenbach, head of the Institute of Chemical Engineering at the RWTH Aachen from 1967 to 1996 and partner in the STEP company till his passing in 2000. His formerly Ph.D. students – Dr.-Ing. Joachim Gebel and Dr.-Ing. Süleyman Yüce, now managing partners of the STEP Consulting GmbH – have accepted these inheritance building up a powerful “Seawater Desalination Department” in their company.
